Following the allocation of funding to replace old hutted classrooms Barron and Smith were commissioned, after competitive interview, to design and administer the construction of a three-classroom Reception class extension and Foundation stage play area for the existing Victorian 3 form entry Infants school.

The design of the extension is inspired by the existing architecture and creates delightful classroom and support spaces suitable for current teaching and learning practices that greatly improved upon those they replace with levels of insulation, comfort, acoustics and daylighting commensurate with current guidelines. The new building is linked to the main building through a new library converted from an existing undersized classroom.

The new block forms, with the existing nursery, an early years area where young children new to the school environment, can work and play away together. Internally the school colours are used to pick out some elements of the building fabric, as well as the fixtures and fittings, the bold primary blue and yellow colours adding vibrancy to the Reception Classrooms.
