Appointed, following a competitive interview in July 2004, to design a new extension to New Woodlands School, a special needs primary catering for pupils with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. The design incorporates the revised guidance in the updated Building Bulletin 77: Designing for Pupils with Special Educational Needs, in developing the strategic brief to accommodate 48 KS3 pupils (aged 11-14).

As part of the brief development the architects undertook study visits with the school to learn from other recently built facilities. Work on site started in March 2006 with completion expected in May 2007.

The resulting design seeks to maximize daylight to teaching and circulation spaces, with external solar shading to minimize unwanted solar gains. The deliberately bold external expression employing purple strips of render provides a contrast with the yellow brick of the existing primary school building.
